The Northwest African American Museum explores the history, culture and art of African Americans in the Pacific Northwest. After many years of struggling to find funding, the NAAM was built. The building is a combination of housing, meeting rooms and museum. Their vision is to acknowledge and celebrate the stories of African Americans who have shaped the history and culture of the Pacific Northwest.
The Museum has three galleries. The Journey Gallery is a permanent exhibit that takes visitors on a multi-sensory journey, exploring how the regions African American community established and sustains itself in the Pacific Northwest. The Northwest Gallery is a rotating exhibit space which has featured many well known African American Artists. Finally there is the Legacy Gallery which is also a rotating exhibit space. The museum is located just minutes from downtown and many of Seattle’s Bed and Breakfasts.
